Every man who embarks on the dangerous profession of writing must be prepared to face ups and downs in his professional life. But, if he is honest, he will admit that earning money is not the primary motive for working, mostly it is the love for fame which instigates writers to write. Sir Law Wallace's royalties on the book 'Ben Hur' amounted to an astounding $ 400,000. Sir Rudyard Kipling was paid half a crown for each word in his stories, Dr Johnson said that no one but a fool would write except for money. but then some other writers believe that a real reward of writing is in the joy of loving what one does.
Writers can be divided into two classes mainly those who look upon writing as a fine art and those who regard it as a well being. The former class of men and women who love words for their own sake, who appreciate beauty because it is beautiful and truth because its true. They don't have intentions for reforming the world or educating the masses.
When Amold Bennett wrote elaborate descriptions about hotels, he was impelled by a mad desire to improve or modify them, He wrote mainly because he liked the subject. Through writing he could give suitable expressions to the ideas and emotions pent up with him.He shot himself to fame because of excellent book written by him called 'Five Towns'.
The latter consist of writers who are inflamed by a passion, a desire o reform the world. Socially and Religiously motivated, the aim of their writing is to convert and change the world. Such writers are easily moved by the anger or indignation. They hate injustice, cruelty, tyranny and immortality. Writing appeals to them , because it gives them a platform to in some small measure 'write' the wrong.
Sir George Bernard Shaw, used many of his plays to as a platform from which he ventilated his opinions on a range of issues, but with his inimitable wit. John Galsworthy, like wise has been accused of using stage to advocate social reforms- 'Stirfe' was created by him with the intention of making the world realize the futility of Strikes. 'The Silver Box' was a complete exposure to the loop holes in the legal system; and 'Justice' was a protest against the solitary confinement in prison and its effects was such that Mr. Winston Churchill had to amend the current existing laws.
No one can really say that writers write or should write for money or not, but what can be said is that mind set with which they start writing can never really forecast the far reaching repercussions of their written words.
